St Margarets is always pleased to accept new players of moderate to advanced standard, to play on Tuesdays and Fridays, between 8.15pm and 10.15pm. Presently, we have vacancies on Fridays only, so if you'd like to join, please contact us on 07949 125 704.
Fees:
Fees are currently £5 per evening (or £35 per month), which just about covers the cost of hiring the court and supplying the feathered shuttlecocks. Prospective members may attend on four evenings before club membership and payment of the joining fee, currently £10, are mandatory.
Premises:
We play upstairs at Knights Youth Centre (SW2 4QQ), which is an independent and voluntary Christian charity that provides a meeting place for all sorts of people aged between eight and nineteen, regardless of gender, race, culture, sexuality, religion and ability, or disability.
Directions:
The club is easy to find, and near several major bus routes (see below).
It is situated closeby the junction of the A205 and A23, just off Streatham and Brixton Hills, and within easy reach of the South London localities of Balham SW17, Tooting SW15, Wandsworth SW18, Clapham South SW12, Clapham SW8, Tulse Hill / Brixton SW9, and Streaham Vale SW16. Some of our members travel from as far afield as Wimbledon SW19, Plumstead SE18 and Chaldon CR3; and, in the case of Sebastian and Solène, France.
Bus Routes:
45 from St Pancras, 50 from Stockwell, 57 from Clapham, 59 from Streatham Vale & King's Cross Station, 109 from Croydon, Brixton & Morden, 133 from Liverpool Street Station, 137 from Oxford Circus, 201 from Morden and Dulwich, 250 from Brixton, 319 from Sloane Square, 333 from Tooting Elephant & Castle, 417 from Crystal Palace & Clapham Old Town, P13 from New Cross.
Trains & Tube:
All trains and Underground stations are a bus-ride away, except poorly-served Streatham Hill, which is only a fifteen minute walk (providing, of course, that you're already kitted out in your nylon vest, hi-glow nikeeees, and sporting go-faster stripes on your skirt).
The nearest trains are:
Brixton (to the North)
Streatham Hill (to the South)
Tulse Hill (to the East)
Balham (to the West-ish)
The nearest underground station (a twenty-minute walk) is Clapham South (westwards); further off are Brixton (north) and Balham (Southwest).
Beginners:
If you have never played badminton, or only had the occasional knockabout in the garden, the recommended introduction to the sport is via Local Education Authority evening classes, which are listed at Floodlight and HotCourses. Also helpful is the Find-A-Club page at the "Badminton England" website.
